Check Out Crayola’s New ‘Colors of the World’ Crayons

At a moment when race is at the very top of the national conversation, Crayola is, finally, providing kids with more than a handful of colors to choose from when they draw self portraits, family portraits and pictures of their friends. Crayola is calling the set “Colors of the World,” and it’s available for pre-order now.

You may remember Crayola releasing its first line of “multicultural crayons” in the early 1990s. It was a box of eight crayons pulled from its standard selection; colors like peach, tan and mahogany—plus black and white crayons for “blending.” This is not that. This is a set of 24 crayons (plus eight other classic colors for eyes and hair) that were developed in partnership with Victor Casale, formerly the chief chemist and managing director of MAC cosmetics and currently CEO of MOB Beauty.

“Finding someone’s right shade has been a goal of mine for my whole career,” Casale says in a promotional video for the crayons’ release.

Now kids will get to choose from colors like “very light golden,” “medium deep rose” and “deepest almond” to make their portraits. Cat Bowen writes for Romper what this means for families—particularly multiracial families:

Coming from a multicultural household, there is literally a crayon in this box for everyone in my family, from my Chinese husband to my Jamaican brother-in-law, to my Puerto Rican nephews, and even my own nearly-translucent Slavic mountain hue. There is a color for all of us—which will undoubtedly be used by my daughter, who is rarely seen without her drawing pad and crayons, and who has, in the past, decided to Picasso all of us with varying shades of neon skin, because flesh tones weren’t an option.

You can pre-order the crayons—and a “Colors of the World” coloring book—from Walmart; both ship on July 5.

How to Celebrate Pride Month as a Family

How to Celebrate Pride Month as a Family

Illustration for article titled How to Celebrate Pride Month as a Family

Photo: Getty Images

It’s been a heavy few months, to say the least. From the pandemic to the protests over police brutality against black Americans, it hasn’t felt like there’s been much to celebrate lately. But now it’s June, which means in addition to everything else that’s happening, it’s also Pride Month.

Pride isn’t simply about rainbows and parades and parties; it’s about honoring gay, lesbian and transgender individuals who made today’s celebrations possible by fighting for LGBTQ rights, most notably through events like the Stonewall Inn rebellion. But it’s also a chance to talk to our kids about the core values of inclusivity that the LGBTQ+ community stands for—and celebrate them.

Talk about what it means to identify as LGBTQ+

If you haven’t yet started talking to your kids about the issues that people in the LGBTQ+ community face, now is the time—or the time to build on any discussions you’ve already had. (Here’s a primer to get you started.)

I also recently came across this video from the National Center for Transgender Equality that talks to transgender kids and adults about their experiences, and it’s a good way for kids to connect the concept with real people they can relate to:

Tune into a virtual Drag Queen Story Hour

We’ve recommended in the past that you take your kids to a local Drag Queen Story Time, but since those may not be happening in many places right now, look for a virtual reading. Denver Pride has announced two planned story times this month: 3 p.m. (MT) June 20 and 1 p.m. (MT) June 21, and more story times from other organizations are likely to follow.

Participate in a virtual 5K

Events company Runstreet is hosting its fourth annual NYC Pride 5K Art Run—but this year, it’s virtual:

Don your fave rainbow gear and head out for a Pride 5K in your neighborhood, snapping a photo of the beauty you find on your run. Tag @Runstreet in your Pride Art Run posts and you’ll be entered into our photo contest for amazing fitness prizes.

The run is being “held” anytime between June 20 and June 28. It’s $10 to enter, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center, which provides healthcare and related services to New York’s LGBTQ+ population.

Host your own Pride celebration day

Dedicate a whole day (or a whole weekend!) to your own personal family Pride celebration. Sure, most of the big parades or parties that make celebrating this month especially fun won’t be happening this year, but you can repurpose other social-distancing activities to be Pride-specific. For example, organize a neighborhood “Rainbow Chalk Walk”—or walk down your street, chalking your own rainbows as you go for others to discover. Or host a social distancing “Rainbow Scavenger Hunt” where kids in the neighborhood decorate their windows or yards with rainbows for everyone to find.

Encourage rainbow-themed crafts, draw rainbows all over the windows with dry erase markers, make rainbow crispy treats—make it an extra-colorful day, is what I’m saying.

And if there is a particular family member or loved one you want to honor and support on this day, have the kids make them a card or a picture, get decked out in all the rainbow garb you own and video chat with them to tell them you love them.

Everyone in my household now eagerly anticipates game night thanks to Jackbox

Everyone in my household now eagerly anticipates game night thanks to Jackbox

Jackbox Hero 2 Source: Jeramy Johnson/ Android Central

If the previous few months of social distancing and quarantine have actually taught this introvert anything, it’s that I actually miss out on get-togethers with loved ones. Even ridiculous things like Friday night trivia at a regional bar or playing Cards Against Humanity with pals in the area seem like extravagant getaways to me today.

My household has been respectable about making time for fun when we can during this dismal period, and we’ve even cracked open the occasional old board game like Monopoly or Sorry a few times. Still, as timeless as those games are, they’ve simply ended up being worn out. Considering that we’ve all been caged working from home or preparing for final tests, we just desire something fun, fresh, and not excessively mentally challenging to captivate us. The good news is, we’ve found the Jackbox series of family-friendly video games. These games have not just brought us closer together throughout our downtime, but they have actually taken a prospective vice in the overuse of our mobile phones and turned that into a positive way for us to connect with each other and spend time together.

What is Jackbox?

Jackbox Header 1 Source: Jackbox Games

Jackbox is a game studio based in Chicago, Illinois, that has in fact been around for 25 years! I came to the games rather recently thanks to a few invitations from colleagues at Android Central, and I then quickly hooked my household in on the fun!

Jackbox offers six different “celebration packs” or collections of video games that household and good friends can play together or from another location. Each celebration pack consists of five special activities, varying from trivia to drawing video games, to song and creation competitors.

In addition to the six celebration pack collections, there are 30 approximately standalone games offered for purchase, such as Drawful 2, Quiplash, and Fibbage. These are typically priced lower than the celebration loads, so they’re a great way to dip your toes in the water to see if you want to attempt other Jackbox video games. That being stated, I’ve buckled down and acquired three party packs (numbers 3, 5, and 6) up until now, and I’m grateful I opted for the combos. A lot of the standalone options are bundled in one or more of the celebration packs, and with the packages, I was able to experience enjoyable brand-new games that I never ever would’ve discovered otherwise.

My household likes to select themes for our player names based on our favorite TV shows like Friends or Scrubs.

A game host (normally the person who purchased the game or pack) opens the app on their device (Playstation, Fire TV, etc.), and preferably has a group of family or pals around them to play. Next, individuals go to jackbox.tv from a web browser on their gadget (no apps required), and go into the unique code for that game session, along with a name. The truth that each participant can use their own gadget that they already have in their hot little hands without a special app is what makes these video games so open and accessible to anyone who wants to play.

Where can you discover Jackbox video games?

Jackbox platforms Source: Android Central

If you are reading this post, then opportunities are you have a gadget capable of playing Jackbox games on. As I mentioned previously, Jackbox is free for individuals to sign up with and play (provided you were welcomed, obviously), and this can be done on pretty much any personal, internet-connected gadget, including phones and tablets running Android and iOS, Windows and Linux PCs, Macs, and Chromebooks.

I purchased my Jackbox Party Packs straight through the Amazon Appstore on my Fire TV Stick 4K, however Jackbox games are offered for buy from a number of other platforms too, consisting of Steam, Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo Change, Android TV, and more.

The one thing I ‘d warn prior to you start downloading a bunch of these celebration packs is that they do use up considerable resources on your streaming device. When it comes to my Fire TELEVISION Stick 4K, I only have adequate storage on the device to fill one Jackbox Party Load at a time. If ever my household wishes to change from Party Pack 3 to Celebration Load 6, for instance, we need to go into the Fire TV settings and remove the very first pack from the gadget before redownloading the second and its media files and resources. Not a substantial deal, however something to keep in mind, especially if you want to switch in between several packs in a brief period of time.

Which do I recommend?

Jackbox Header 2 Source: Jackbox Games

Jackbox makes so many excellent video games and does such a good job of stabilizing each celebration pack with different designs and titles that I can truthfully state that you should more than happy with whichever pack you select. Today, I’m torn in between Party Load 5 and Celebration Load 6.

Rap-battling robots, Shark Tank-style developments, and goofy tests draw out even the most introverted amongst loved ones.

From Celebration Load 5, I like Mad Verse City, which is a game where you get to help produce silly raps that are performed by Transformer-like robots, along with Patently Stupid, which is a Shark Tank-style game made all the funnier by my family’s failure to sketch our inventions worth a lick.

I likewise am truly addicted to Celebration Pack 6, due to the fact that Joke Boat’s ridiculous stand-up talks to me, while Role Models is hands-down my family’s preferred Buzzfeed-style test video game. Aside from these gems, I constantly take pleasure in a great round of You Don’t Know Jack, in addition to any version of Quiplash or Trivia Murder Celebration

Household game night is back!

I’m fortunate that, for the many part, my teenage kids still take pleasure in hanging out with my wife and me (or at least they do a good task pretending they do), and I like that we still are able to do things together as a household. While the classic parlor game constantly bring us together, I’m so grateful to my Android Central pals for presenting us to the Jackbox household of video games.

There has been at least one, and usually, 3 or four, fantastic games that each of us has enjoyed in the celebration packs we’ve purchased, and every video game session ultimately degenerates into hours of giggling and conversation. I’m trying to cherish this forced quarantine time that has actually brought my teenagers ever closer to each other and me and my spouse, and activities like Jackbox video game nights are assisting to make those minutes even more satisfying.

The fifth edition of the Jackbox Celebration Load brings some innovative games, such as Mad Verse City, Split the Space, and Patently Silly. This one’s a bit of a diversion from standard Jackbox games, but it’s a heck of a lot of enjoyable!

Celebration more difficult

Jackbox Party Load 6

Murder secret and role play

American detained in Iran since 2018 freed, on his way home, his family says

American detained in Iran since 2018 freed, on his way home, his family says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A U.S. Navy veteran who said he contracted the coronavirus while detained in Iran since 2018 was freed on Thursday as part of a deal in which the United States allowed an Iranian-American physician to visit Iran, his lawyer and a U.S. official said.

Michael White, a freed U.S. Navy veteran detained in Iran since 2018, poses with U.S. Special Envoy for Iran Brian Hook while on his return to the United States at Zurich Airport in Zurich, Switzerland June 4, 2020. U.S. State Department/Handout via REUTERS

Iran’s decision to release American Michael White and the U.S. move to let dual citizen Majid Taheri visit Iran, both of which were confirmed by Iran’s foreign minister, appeared to be a rare instance of U.S.-Iranian cooperation.

A White House spokesman expressed hope that White’s release could lead to an opening in the bitter relationship.

The two nations are at odds on a host of issues including the U.S. decision to abandon a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear program and impose crippling economic sanctions on Tehran, as well as their jockeying for influence across the Middle East.

White had been released from an Iranian prison in mid-March after being sentenced in 2019 for an unspecified offense, but had remained in Iran in the custody of Switzerland, which represents U.S. interests in Iran since the two cut diplomatic ties shortly after Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.

“I’m improving. I did contract coronavirus in the Mashhad central prison prior to going out on furlough. But I’m recovering pretty decently,” White told Fox News Channel on the tarmac of Zurich airport, adding he had been “in poor shape.”

“I feel all right, and happy to be back,” White said, thanking President Donald Trump “for his efforts both diplomatically and otherwise, making America great again.” He also thanked the Swiss Embassy in Tehran.

“I just got off the phone with former American hostage Michael White, who is now in Zurich after being released from Iran. He will be on a U.S. plane shortly, and is COMING HOME,” Trump said on Twitter.

“Thank you to Iran, it shows a deal is possible!” Trump added.

The Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed it played a role in what it called “the humanitarian gesture” on White and Taheri and said it “stands ready” to help further.

The negotiations to get White released followed several months of discussions with Iran, said a person familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Taheri’s lawyer said Taheri would visit family in Iran and seek medical treatment before returning to the United States. He has pleaded guilty to violating U.S. sanctions, the lawyer added.

RARE BRIGHT SPOT

The deal is a rare bright spot in an otherwise deeply frayed relationship that has grown more hostile since Trump took office in 2017.

Asked whether White’s release could be an opening in terms of U.S.-Iranian relations, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley told Fox News Channel: “Hopefully so.”

U.S.-Iranian relations have been bitter since the Islamic Revolution toppled the U.S.-backed Shah of Iran in 1979 and Iranian revolutionaries stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.

Tensions flared after Trump pulled out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and reimposed U.S. sanctions, and worsened after a Jan. 3 U.S. drone strike in Iraq killed Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force.

Both nations have called for the release of prisoners due to the novel coronavirus outbreak. Iran is one of the worst-hit countries in the Middle East, while the United States has reported the world’s highest number of deaths and infections.

White’s release came two days after the United States deported Sirous Asgari, an Iranian professor imprisoned in the United States despite being acquitted on charges of stealing trade secrets. Iranian media reported his arrival on Wednesday.

The U.S. State Department and Iranian officials have denied Asgari was part of a swap with White or anyone else, calling his case separate.

Last December, Washington and Tehran worked on a prisoner exchange in which Iran freed U.S. citizen Xiyue Wang, who had been held for three years on spying charges, and the United States freed Iranian Massoud Soleimani, who faced charges of violating U.S. sanctions on Iran.

The autopsy launched on Monday stated Floyd’s death, which triggered nationwide protests, was a murder which he had no underlying medical conditions.

Later Monday, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner launched information of its autopsy findings that also said Floyd’s death was a homicide triggered by asphyxiation however that he had possible underlying health conditions and intoxicants in his body that might have been contributing consider his death.

On the surface area, the independent autopsy would appear to boost the prosecution’s case against Derek Chauvin, the policeman who knelt on Floyd’s neck for numerous minutes prior to he died last week.

But legal experts said it might do the opposite by creating confusion in the mind of the jury.

” It will become part of the defense strategy to state they can’t even get the cause of death right,” said Gerald Lefcourt, a criminal defense lawyer.

The independent report was gotten ready for the Floyd household by Dr. Allecia Wilson of the University of Michigan and Dr. Michael Baden, who has dealt with numerous prominent murder cases.

Graphic video footage revealed Chauvin, who is white, pushing his knee into Floyd’s neck. Floyd, a 46- year-old black male, gasped for air and consistently groaned: “Please, I can’t breathe,” while onlookers screamed at cops to let him up.

Chauvin was charged on Friday with third-degree murder and murder. He has been fired from the Minneapolis cops department.

The video reignited a profusion of rage that civil liberties activists stated has actually long simmered in cities throughout the nation over consistent racial bias in the U.S. criminal justice system.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who is leading the prosecution, is not obliged to use the independent autopsy or present it as proof at trial.

Dan Alonso, a former chief assistant district lawyer in Manhattan, said the prosecution “would not be doing their job if they ignored it.”

Former district attorneys and defense lawyer informed Reuters that Chauvin faced an extremely hard case offered the strong video proof.

If prosecutors introduce the independent report, the defense could take on the clashing autopsies to produce concerns in the jury’s mind about the cause of death.

Introducing the report would also allow the defense team to cross-examine Baden and utilize his long history of operate in celeb trials to cast him as a hired gun, according to defense attorneys.

” This report developed a lot of ammo for a defense group to use in a criminal case or a subsequent civil case,” said Paul Callan, a previous New york city district attorney.

Trump’s family tries to clean up his mess by tweeting wildly inconsistent calls for peace

Trump’s family tries to clean up his mess by tweeting wildly inconsistent calls for peace

Image: Paul Morigi / WireImage

By Nicole Gallucci2020-05-29 17: 24: 52 UTC

The Trump family is extremely online today, and they’re all over the place with their messaging.

On Friday morning, Twitter hid another one of Donald Trump’s tweets and slapped a warning label on it. Trump’s statement about the protests over the death of George Floyd — which included the phrase, “when the looting starts, the shooting starts” — violated the site’s rules about glorifying violence, and many horrified users agreed. (For background, that phrase was first spoken in 1967 by Miami police chief, Walter Headley, when explaining that his force “didn’t mind being accused of police brutality.”)

This is part of an ongoing fight between the social media platforms and the president, who yesterday signed an executive order intended to intimidate these companies against getting in the way of him spreading (often false) information to his followers.

After Twitter took action against Trump’s tweet on Friday morning, the official White House Twitter account re-tweeted the president’s words. (Twitter eventually censored that tweet as well.) But as Trump’s unpresidential, divisive messages came under fire, his family members logged on and tried to do their best to clean up his mess.

Trump's family tries to clean up his mess by tweeting wildly inconsistent calls for peace

Image: screenshot / twitter

It’s rare to see the majority of the Trump family commenting online at the same time, but on Friday Melania, Ivanka, Donald Trump Jr., Eric, and even Lara shared their thoughts on the chaos that’s unfolding in Minnesota and Twitter’s actions against the president.

The tweets, however, all carried fairly inconsistent messages.

Melania called for peace and offered her deepest condolences to George Floyd’s family. She also asked that we focus on “peace, prayers & healing” as a nation, which directly contradicts her husband’s call to send the National Guard to Minnesota and use violence if necessary to get the situation under control.

Our country allows for peaceful protests, but there is no reason for violence. I’ve seen our citizens unify & take care of one another through COVID19 & we can’t stop now. My deepest condolences to the family of George Floyd. As a nation, let’s focus on peace, prayers & healing.

— Melania Trump (@FLOTUS) May 29, 2020

Ivanka chose not to address the protests at all. She simply said the people in Minneapolis “are hurting for a reason” and that her heart goes out to Floyd’s family and all hurting Americans.

“Justice is how we heal,” she wrote — providing a stark contrast in tone to her father’s tweets.

People in Minneapolis are hurting for a reason. Justice is how we heal.

My heart goes out to George Floyd‘s family and all Americans who are hurting.

— Ivanka Trump (@IvankaTrump) May 29, 2020

Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr., spent much of the morning trying to disparage Joe Biden, Ilhan Omar, and Jack Dorsey. But he did take some time to address the protests.

What happened to George Floyd was disgusting. He should be alive today & I’m praying for his family

People are right to be angry, but there’s never an excuse for the type of violent riots unfolding now

No American should ever have to watch their own community burn to the ground https://t.co/b7Q0kljGW4

— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) May 29, 2020

Eric Trump also took shots at Joe Biden and came for Twitter on Friday morning, and Lara Trump said that although a murder was committed, other crimes are now also taking place in Minnesota.

Aside from the outward facing bias of @Twitter, there is hardly a single influential conservative on this platform who doesn’t believe their account has been negatively manipulated & influenced behind the scenes. I’m thrilled to see @realDonaldTrump take decisive action.

— Eric Trump (@EricTrump) May 29, 2020

Looting is not protesting. Burning down local homes and businesses is not protesting. How sad that the memory of #GeorgeFloyd has been lost in all of this.

— Lara Trump (@LaraLeaTrump) May 29, 2020

Illegal and should absolutely be prosecuted to the full extent of the law:

Murder And as a reminder, also illegal:

Theft and arson

— Lara Trump (@LaraLeaTrump) May 29, 2020

It’s really striking to see that Trump and several of his family members seem more concerned with taking down Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey that dealing with the devastating events in Minneapolis, a deadly pandemic, and an unfolding economic crisis. But the president seems to be leaning in.

Since the social platform fact-checked one of Trump’s tweets about mail-in ballots earlier this week, he’s been firing off unhinged rants and accusing Twitter of trying to stifle free speech.

Even today, as the people continue to mourn the loss of George Floyd and plead for justice, Trump is bashing Twitter on Twitter. So is the White House account.

Twitter is doing nothing about all of the lies & propaganda being put out by China or the Radical Left Democrat Party. They have targeted Republicans, Conservatives & the President of the United States. Section 230 should be revoked by Congress. Until then, it will be regulated!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 29, 2020

REVOKE 230!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 29, 2020

This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules about glorifying violence. However, @Twitter has determined that it will allow terrorists, dictators, and foreign propagandists to abuse its platform. pic.twitter.com/5Qi0m66Vnh

— The White House (@WhiteHouse) May 29, 2020

The President did not glorify violence. He clearly condemned it.@Jack and Twitter’s biased, bad-faith “fact-checkers” have made it clear: Twitter is a publisher, not a platform. https://t.co/lTm3Pxxaqg

— The White House (@WhiteHouse) May 29, 2020

In times of deep sorrow and nationwide distress, this is not what a president’s Twitter account should look like. Americans should be able to count on the president and those associated with the White House to — at the very least — not further divide the nation or incite violence.

Avis’ policy states that they have actually boosted the methods utilized to clean up each vehicle during the pandemic, specifically focusing on areas that consumers touch the most, including seats, guiding wheels, door manages and other tough surfaces. They don’t define what cleaning products they’re utilizing, however do state that they are utilizing < a data-ga="[["Embedded Url","External link","https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2",{"metric25":1}]] href= "https://www.epa.gov/pesticide-registration/list-n-disinfectants-use-against-sars-cov-2" rel=" noopener noreferrer" target=" _ blank" > Environmental management Agency-recommended products. Hertz

Hertz has actually introduced something they’re calling the < a data-ga="[["Embedded Url","External link","https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/misc/index.jsp?targetPage=travel_advisory.jsp",{"metric25":1}]] href=" https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/misc/index.jsp?targetPage=travel_advisory.jsp" rel=" noopener noreferrer" target=" _ blank ">” Hertz Gold Requirement Clean” According to Hertz, this< a data-ga="[["Embedded Url","External link","https://pub.emails.hertz.com/GoldStandardClean?_ga=2.32559102.1187242727.1589488229-1113922324.1566308932",{"metric25":1}]] href=" https://pub.emails.hertz.com/GoldStandardClean?_ga=2.3255910211872427271589488229-11139223241566308932" rel=" noopener noreferrer" target=" _ blank" >15- point cleansingand sanitization process lines up with U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Avoidance (CDC) standards.

Picking your cars and truck

When choosing the car you want to rent, ask when it was last leased. Make certain to interact with the customer service representative if you prefer to utilize an automobile that has actually not been rented in the recent past.

When in doubt, disinfect

Although your rental company might be using the cleansing practices listed above (or similar), it’s constantly great to sterilize the cars and truck yourself utilizing items that are < a data-ga="[["Embedded Url","External link","https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/disinfecting-your-home.html",{"metric25":1}]] href=" https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019- ncov/prevent-getting-sick/disinfecting-your-home. html" rel=" noopener noreferrer" target=" _ blank" > suggested by the CDC

You can also make your own decontaminating option:

  1. Use unexpired family bleach and dilute utilizing 5 tablespoons( 1/3 cup) per 1 gallon of water. Or:
  2. Use an alcohol service that has70 %alcohol.

Here is a < a data-ga ="[["Embedded Url","External link","https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/cleaning-disinfection.html",{"metric25":1}]] href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019 - ncov/prevent-getting-sick/cleaning-disinfection. html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target =" _ blank" > total disinfection guide

  • Usage disinfectant wipes on all door deals with, including the trunk latch.
  • Clean down the steering wheel and safety belt (buckles, retractor, webbing).
  • Spray/wipe down dashboard, radio console, equipment stick and glove compartment.

These are the areas that are most touched in the automobile and therefore the very best locations to start. We also suggest vacuuming the interior of the lorry and cleaning any rubber flooring mats. While cleansing, use a mask and disposable gloves (if you have them) and keep the windows rolled down.

Stage an At-Home Olympic Games

Stage an At-Home Olympic Games

Illustration for article titled Stage an At-Home Olympic Games

Although the Olympic Games are canceled for 2020, your family needn’t go without the rush of competitive sporting events this summer if you host your own backyard Olympics instead. You don’t need to be able to complete a roundoff back handspring or risk letting your kids throw a javelin to do so—just have some fun coming up with creative events, use your phone as a timer and grab a sheet of paper to keep score.

Stage an opening/closing ceremony

The spectacle of the Olympic Games is as much about the opening and closing ceremonies as it is the games itself, so don’t forget to incorporate them into your at-home competition. Get the kids involved and create your own flags, medals and torches.

Let each competitor choose what country or mascot they want to represent. Choosing a real country is great—and can open the door to additional educational opportunities, sure—but they can absolutely be made up (I am partial to competing on behalf of Narnia and Hogwarts, myself).

Also, just like the real Olympic Games, you can make yours stretch over multiple days. Hold the opening ceremony on one day and the closing ceremony on another. Opt for a weekend-long competition to ensure everyone is available to join in the fun.

Plan a diverse lineup of events

You’ll want to program your at-home Olympics with a diverse array of events, and they need not all be athletic in nature (if fact, the goofier and more creative you get, the better). You can dream up your own, or you can incorporate games that already exist—it’s totally up to you. Depending on the ages of everyone involved, the games can range from the simplistic to the semi-challenging:

  • Compete to see who can drink a large glass of water the fastest using a straw. Or have an eating contest.
  • Using your biggest indoor floor space, see who can jump the farthest, marking each person’s jump with tape.
  • Time a scavenger hunt to see who can find all the items fastest. If your kids are of different ages or ability levels, you can allow them to do it in teams.
  • See who can make it from the back of the house to the front door the fastest—blindfolded and with the guidance of a partner.
  • Make paper planes and measure which one flies the farthest.
  • If you have a pool, host your own swim meet.

The options are endless, and the setup doesn’t need to be elaborate—the point is have a great time while spending family time together as a family.

Everyone’s a winner

Athletes train for a lifetime to compete for a medal and represent their country in the real Olympics. In the at-home Olympics, everybody is a winner. Don’t let your kids’ competitive natures get the better of them. Find a way to keep the competition light and ensure everyone gets a medal in the end. The real prize is getting everyone up, moving and hopefully laughing together.

How to Help Kids Get Better at Video Chatting

How to Help Kids Get Better at Video Chatting

Illustration for article titled How to Help Kids Get Better at Video Chatting

Photo: Shutterstock

If there’s one thing parents have learned during the pandemic, it’s this: Little kids suck at video chatting. Maybe we already suspected this based on the occasional, disastrous FaceTime or Skype call with out-of-town family. But then we were thrust into this all-online-all-the-time reality, in which video chats feel so much more important, and yet the kids are still just terrible at it, despite all the extra practice.

Eventually, they will get better at it, simply by virtue of getting older, less easily distracted and generally better at holding conversations. In the meantime, though, there are some tactics you can try to set your little ones up for Zoom success.

Choose the right time of day

You don’t take your kids to the grocery store 20 minutes before their nap time or to the playground when they’re hungry, because the few times you’ve done that, you realized your mistake right away and vowed to be more careful in the future. The same rules apply here.

If your kid is hungry, cranky, distracted or even more energetic than usual, they’re probably not going to do very well during a Zoom call. Schedule calls for a time when they’re most likely to be the calmest, happiest version of themselves. For older babies and toddlers, bath time might even be a good option if you have a tablet or laptop you can set up on a stool (far enough away from any splashing water!). Even if they’re not super chatty or conversational, the grandparents will love to watch a little one splash about.

Help them make a ‘question box’

Grownups might think of this as a collection of “icebreaker” questions, but the difference is that icebreaker questions are most often only used at the very beginning of a meeting or event: the first day of school, during the breakfast meeting for a work retreat, that sort of thing. They get people talking, they shake loose any nerves and they help the group start to build connections.

The difference with a video chat “question box” is that you can bust it out whenever you see things start to fall apart. Work with kids ahead of time on a collection of fun or silly questions: If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? Who is your favorite Disney character? If you could have any animal as a pet, what would you choose? What is the best gift you ever received?

If they help come up with the questions, they’ll be more invested in participating when you bring out the box.

Plan a (short) agenda

You don’t need to have a 10-point list of topics to cover during your phone call, but with little kids, it helps to have a bit of structure. Prepare a “show and tell” with a loved one ahead of time—especially if the person they’re calling is also younger.

Or plan an activity for them to do with the other person or simply to do while they’re talking. It might be easier for a grandparent to talk to kids while they’re sitting at the table and coloring because they’re naturally a little more calm and focused during that type of activity. You might also want to have books to read or some of their recent artwork nearby to show off in a pinch.

Separate siblings

If you’ve got two (or more) little kids and they both want to see and talk to grandma and now they’re spending the whole video call trying to elbow each other out of the way, it’s time to separate them.

If you have multiple devices, set them up in different rooms of the house and start a three-way call. The physical separation could be enough to take the edge off and let them chat a little more naturally.

Keep it short

No matter what you do or how strategic you try to be, some days, the kids are just going to want to make silly faces or rude noises while the person on the other end tries to ask them about their day.

The key is to remember that it’s okay for them to suck at this—they’re little kids! Little kids who are living through extra weird times. So keep the calls short: They don’t need a 45-minute catch-up with Auntie Sarah every other day. Five or ten minutes here or there is sometimes all we can ask of them, and that’s enough.

Work on Your Family Tree With These Free Online Genealogy Resources

Whether you come from a family that proudly displays their coat of arms in the foyer, or knows very little about where they came from, you may have some questions about your background. Being stuck at home thanks to the coronavirus pandemic means that we may have more time on our hands, but conducting genealogical research isn’t as straightforward as a simple Google search.

Though many historical records have been digitized, some require you to be inside a library to access them. Now that we don’t have that option, libraries like the New York Public Library are making some of its genealogical research resources available online—including their reference librarians. Here are a few options:

Use the National Archives

Regardless of where you’re located and if you have a library card, you’ll be able to access a large number of genealogical research resources through the National Archives. These include:

  • Census Records
  • Ethnic Heritage
  • Military Service Records
  • Immigration Records
  • Land Records
  • Naturalization Records
  • More Topics

Whether you’re a professional genealogist or looking into your family for the first time, this is a great first stop for online information.

Remote access to databases

Databases like Ancestry, Newspapers.com, America’s Historical Newspapers, The New York Times Historical Database and the African American Historical Serials Collection are typically only available to use for within the physical walls of the library. But in the midst of the pandemic, the NYPL has made these available to their library card holders regardless of location. Check with your local library to see what you have access to through their system.

There are also a variety of online resources anyone can access (without a library card), including the NYPL’s online research guides for genealogy, like:

  • How to Research a Family Business
  • Researching the History of Your New York City Home
  • Researching Dutch Ancestors
  • Researching Ancestors who were Loyalists in the Revolutionary War
  • Finding Places
  • How to Find Your Suffragette Ancestors
  • 1890 New York City Police Census

Ask a genealogist

If you’re stumped and still have questions about your research, librarians at the NYPL who specialize in genealogy are available to answer them. You can contact them via email at [email protected] or use their web form. According to the NYPL, at this point, most of the questions posed to their librarians have been answered online, so it’s worth a shot.

High in the Alps, Giant Blankets Slow a Glacier’s Ice Melt

High in the Alps, Giant Blankets Slow a Glacier’s Ice Melt

For 150 years tourists have actually been traveling to the town of Belvédère, high in the Alps of southern Switzerland, for the possibility to stroll inside a glacier. Around 1870, a regional family had the idea of digging a shallow, 100- meter tunnel into the side of the Rhône Glacier, one of Europe’s biggest. Paying visitors might stroll through a frozen grotto straight out of a fairy tale, lit a captivating shade of blue by ice-filtered sunlight.

Glaciers move and ice melts, so at the beginning of every summertime tourist season the tunnel has to be carved once again. In recent years, though, international warming has actually posed a more severe threat to the glacier, as well as to the popular ice grotto; in between 2011 and 2016, the glacier pulled away by about 150 meters. To slow the ice melt, the Carlen family, which has actually handled the grotto since 1988, came up with the concept of covering their part of the glacier with white fleece blankets to reflect the sunlight. A glacier professional informed a BBC press reporter in 2016 that these blankets slow the ice melt by 50 to 70 percent each year between June and September.

German professional photographer Thomas Wrede has actually been photographing the ice grotto given that2017 To him, the desperate efforts to slow the melt with blankets signify the Sisyphean task of correcting the environmental destruction of worldwide warming. “Although the blankets are constantly changed, their scruffy look exposes the excellent futility connected with attempting to stop climate modification,” Wrede says. (The Carlen family isn’t alone in using huge blankets to slow ice melt. Many European ski resorts also utilize them too.)

In spite of the family’s best efforts– for the previous years, the blankets have covered the glacier year-round– the ice grotto might only be around for a couple more years. The Rhône Glacier is simply melting too quickly. “The effort needed to keep the structural integrity of the ice grotto is ever-increasing,” Wrede adds.

Wrede’s photography series documents both the exterior of the glacier, curtained in greyish blankets like a Christo and Jeanne-Claude setup, and the luminescent interior of the grotto, where visitors can see centuries-old ice formations. “As an artist, I have an interest in artificial landscapes, like the built nature of theme parks,” he says. “I like to question the limitations of the natural and the synthetic, what is genuine and what is staged.”

Artifice and nature, grotto and glacier– both are threatened by environment modification. The ice tunnel may just have a few years, however the Rhône Glacier’s days are also numbered. Researchers approximate that two-thirds of the glacial ice in the Alps will melt by 2100
